Below are the calculations
of the value of rewards for a household that spends an average of $400
a month on gas with a single credit card without using the card for
other purchases.
The results assume that
80% of the gas expenditures are made with the company, and 20% are made
with other competing gas stations. Notice how the credit cards issued
by oil companies lead the table by giving rewards in excess of 3 cents
per dollar.
The results are sorted
first by the annual rewards value, and then by the first year rewards
value. The first year’s value include sign up bonuses that the cards
give as a lump sum or by doubling the rewards granted in the first period
of using the card.
